International Trade Fair of Information Society Technologies INFOBALT 2005, Vilnius, Lithuania, October 27, 2005 – “Neltes tinklas” launched today the first next generation wireless broadband access network in Lithuania.  The first network in the Baltic States based on the 3G UMTS TDD standard, it supports full mobility and data transfer speeds of up to 3 Mbps.  The company plans to sign agreements for wholesale data transfer services with its first customers in the near future.

During the INFOBALT 2005 trade fair, Ian Henderson, business development director from US-based IPWireless, Inc, the company that offers the standards-based broadband wireless technology, will introduce UMTS TDD to specialists and potential customers.

 

Network deployments have already started in Vilnius and will continue in the major cities of the country. UMTS TDD networks have been popular among world’s leading telecommunications operators since 2002.

 

About UAB „Neltės tinklas“

Lithuanian network operator NELTĖ and Sweden based ATENIT (now Accelerated Wireless Communication AB) formed the joint venture UAB „Neltes tinklas“ to deploy and maintain wireless broadband access networks in Lithuania.

The joint venture UAB “Neltės tinklas” will deploy and maintain Neltė’s wireless broadband access networks, operating in licensed 3.5 GHz spectrum. For the first time in Baltic countries, the network infrastructure will be based on the UMTS TDD 3G standard with technology developed by IPWireless. Since 2002, UMTS TDD has emerged as the leading global standard for mobile broadband, with commercial deployments in several countries around the world including Australia, the Czech Republic, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and South East Asia.
